Pay Per Click Affiliate Advertising – Increasing Your Affiliate Marketing Income

If you need your new Affiliate Business Website to show up quickly in the search engines and can’t wait for it to rise to the top of the search results naturally, via search engine optimization, then your option may be to ‘pay to play’ using pay-per-click marketing.

Perhaps:

New Website – It hasn’t yet risen in the Search Engines results. But you need to show up in Google.

New Product – You need to promote a product or service and need to reach your target market.

New Business – Budget tight? PPC can offer great ROI and fit in with any size budget.

Pay-Per-Click or Contextual advertising could well be the answer

You’ve no doubt seen the little box ads, often on the right hand side of the search engines results and often on other websites as well. Pay-per-click advertising is an effective and targeted form of online advertising that allows you to control the costs of your advertising by only paying when your interested visitors actually click through to your website.

So What Is Pay-Per-Click Advertising?

At it’s simplest PPC is a three line ad that often appears on pages with the search results. The ads are shown when keywords, or search terms that are entered into the ‘search box’ by users of the search engines and then trigger your ad to show.

Advertisers ‘bid’ on keywords and link them to specific ads that will show as a result of the keywords being used in the ‘search box’.

Simple Yet Highly Targeted

Pay-Per-Click’s seemingly simple system has an amazing array of tweaks and twiddles to help the affiliate advertiser target ‘exactly’ the type of customer they wish to market to.

Unlike print or billboard advertising, which is untargeted & doesn’t appeal to 90% of the passing audience, Pay-per-click has the ability of only being seen by the target market, people who are highly interested in what you are advertising, making it highly affective when used at it’s best.

An Example Of Using Pay-Per-Click

Let’s say that you’re selling ‘Treadmills’ and you only want to appear to anyone looking to buy a treadmill.

With Pay-per-click advertising you ensure that the only time that your advert, ‘selling treadmills’, appears is when the actual word ‘Treadmill’ is used by those searching the internet for ‘treadmills’ – not ‘rowing machines’ or ‘exercise bikes’.

Instant High Quality Traffic

Further more, unlike magazines, billboards, flyers, TV or radio, you only pay when a visitor clicks on your advert, making it highly targeted and highly affordable advertising.

Unique Advertising Format

No other advertising format has ever been so efficient at targeting customers & controlling your affiliate marketing costs.

Level Playing Fields For All Businesses

Unlike the expenses involved in traditional print advertising and those of TV or Radio adverts, Pay-per-click allows businesses of all sizes and with the most limited budgets to reach a world wide audience and win the custom of buyers over their bigger competitors.

High Returns On Investment

A further huge advantage of pay-per-click advertising over traditional advertising is that once the visitor ‘clicks’ the advert they will be taken to the exact page of a website that is designed to convert a visitor into a buyer – Highly Effective Targeting.

If the visitor has reached the point, in the buying cycle, of wishing to make a purchase then, if you show them what they are looking for, they are very likely to take out their wallets and click the ‘buy now’ button.

If you have built well crafted pages then your conversion from visitors to customers can be unbelievably high.

For The Beginner & The Advanced User

Unlike many services and tools on the internet, pay-per-click is easy to get started with. Google advertise that you can have a campaign up and running in less that 15 minutes. This is indeed true, however having an active campaign and having an effective campaign are two different things.

Running a pay-per-click campaign takes some knowledge and understanding.

Pay Per Click & Affiliate Marketing

There are many good reasons why you might consider using pay per click in your affiliate business marketing mix.

If you’re working in niche and you want to build highly targeted traffic to your affiliate website then, if the price is right, pay per click can bring highly targeted traffic to your site, people looking for exactly what you are promoting.

If you have just begun your affiliate marketing website then you may be waiting for the search engines to crawl your site or for it to rise in the natural search results. Pay per click can help you to be seen on page one of search engines.

If you know that certain websites, that your intended market will browse, host pay per click adverts, then you could target those sites to appear and drive traffic to your affiliate website.

Find out how PPC Advertising increases your Affiliate Business ROI by using PPC as part of your website marketing mix.

Want to know how to use pay per click effectively in your marketing mix?

Take a look at both ‘The Super Affiliate Handbook’ or ‘Affiliate Project X’ both have great sections on using pay per click to maximise your affiliate marketing commissions. Read my reviews of both these books in my affiliate handbooks and courses reviews [http://affiliate-books-and-courses.com/affiliate-handbooks-guides-courses.htm] section

What you are about to read may surprise most Australians but it is very possible to generate a very sizable income even in Australia through Pay Per Click marketing. Whilst there have been many sad stories of people losing a great deal of money through this form of online business, if its done right, you can in fact make huge amounts of money. This article looks at Pay Per Click marketing and gives some advice on how to avoid losing money.

Pay Per Click (also known as PPC) is a form of Affiliate Marketing that has the potential to make you a very sizable extra or primary income if done correctly.

As the name suggests, Pay Per Click rewards affiliates a commission for visitors either clicking on a link to a merchant’s website or clicking on a link and then doing something like filling out a form with their details (this is commonly called Cost Per Action). The visitor doesn’t have to actually purchase anything from the merchant for the affiliate to get paid, which is why this form of Affiliate Marketing is very attractive to many people.

Commissions for Pay Per Click can range from just 0.01c per click to $1-10 for filling out a form, right up to $US80 for some very niche products. The average Pay Per Click & Cost Per Action commission is $1-5. This might not seem much but imagine if you could get at least 100 people doing that a day just for one Pay Per Click campaign. You could then have literally hundreds of these campaigns if you can manage it, and then you are talking about some serious cash!

There are many Pay Per Click programs available out there that you can join to start making these commissions. They are run by search engines or dedicated affiliate networks. The following are the most well known for Australians:

Google: The most popular search engine in the world generates a huge portion of its revenue through Pay Per Click advertising. If you conduct any search on Google, you are bound to see a section at the top & right hand side of the results page that have the title “Sponsored Links”. These links are in fact advertisements paid for by merchants or Pay Per Click marketers all over the world. Essentially advertisers only pay Google for these ads when someone clicks on their link. Google then runs an advertising program called Adsense Anyone who owns a website can display Google Adsense links on their site. If a visitor to their site clicks on a link, you get a Pay Per Click commission. The amount will depend on how much that link cost to the advertiser. It has been known that some very niche products will pay up to $US80 for a click, but this is the absolute exception rather than the norm. Depending on what sort of subject your site is about, your PPC commission will probably average around $0.10-$2.00. But this isn’t bad for doing nothing but displaying some ads on your website, and you didn’t even have to sell advertising space to the advertisers!

Yahoo: Similar to Google, Yahoo runs a Pay Per Click program through its subsidiary Overture. The program works pretty much the same as Google, the only difference is that Yahoo vets all advertisers before allowing them to purchase ads through their system. They also vet all publishers of websites so that not anyone is posting Yahoo ads on their site.

ClixGalore Australia: ClixGalore is a well known Affiliate Network. Commissions are paid to affiliates for Pay Per Click (or Cost Per Action or as a percentage of the sale). The great thing about ClixGalore over many other affiliate networks is that it has an Australian branch that specializes in Australian companies. There are many well known companies that advertise through ClixGalore including ANZ Bank, Citibank, Fox Sports, OPSM, Interflora etc, as well as many online brands like DealsDirect, RosesOnly, RedBalloon etc.

Commissions Junction: Commissions Junction or CJ is a very professional affiliate network that features some of the biggest names in the world including eBay, Dell, Lenovo, Apple, Monster, AT&T, Adobe etc. They are also starting to get more Australian advertisers which is good. CJ features a lot of information including CJU – Commissions Junction University, which is an online learning resource all about affiliate marketing.

There are many other Pay Per Click networks available and there are a huge growing number of Cost Per Action networks as well.

But before you go out and start participating in Pay Per Click affiliate marketing, be warned that this one area of affiliate marketing that is not for the uneducated. There are many sad stories out there of people who have lost thousands of dollars, if not more, trying their hand at PPC marketing only to make an overall big loss. Without the right education you wouldn’t know something like the fact that Google is penalising Pay Per Click marketers for their ads if the ad sends a visitor directly to the merchant’s website. Their penalty is that they will increase the cost of your ad sometimes by a large amount. Many people think their ad costs are increased because of competition and so they may even be motivated to accept the higher amount because it seems like a profitable product they are promoting, when in actual fact its just Google policy to increase the amount of ads that go directly to a Cost Per Action website. Of course there are ways around this, but this needs a whole new dedicated post if not pages to explain!

What you need to do is do as much research as you can about Pay Per Click. There are copious amounts of resources out there, lots of forums you can register on & ask questions, lots of guidebooks you can buy – lots of information. Learn as much as possible before jumping into Pay Per Click.

Search engines are usually not interested to promote or suggest an SEO service because they lose ad revenue and are held liable when the SEO firm does a bad job. SEO organizations do not work due to the power struggles between various marketers.

Why Search Engines do not like SEO

Search engines straight away cannot agree with SEO services since SEO services providers may or I can say directly affect their revenue search engines are getting through the pay per click programs they are offering. So, there is no official guidelines for How to SEO. Search engines always give a brief guideline but never provide a precise help required. Because if they had direct rules someone can find or crack a similar techniques to manipulate the search results thats were still under their TOC rule book. What matters in the SEO industry is results. How did the top site get there? How can my site rank at the top?

Why You can’t Trust an SEO Based on Their Rankings

A Site owned and run by an SEO which is doing good and for competitive terms will rank well, still there is no guarantee that the search engine will do a good job for them. Because I have come across a lot of website owners who buy SEO services lose money and again bought a different service from a different SEO. Some SEO’s have qualities outside the Box thats makes them popular and help them spread the message. This help does not mean that these guys are good at promoting your websites, only that they are good in promoting their websites.

Quality SEO is always expensive and takes more time. But because of bad SEO’s in the market the entire SEO field gets tarred with the same brush for the action of few bad people. Some companies rum PPC as regular SEO. But one thing always keep in mind that organic SEO if always different from PPC marketing.

The Problem with Labeling SEO’s

A website is important or not but the main task for an SEO is to make a search engine believe that the site is important. No matter how you do it, the job of the SEO is to improve rankings and to drive traffic. It depends upon the website to website that which techniques is to be used for the promotion. Because there are certain categories which are very competitive so an SEO has to work outside the SEO guideline ( think out of the box) set by the major search engine like Google, yahoo or msn. So, Ultimately it is up to the SEO service consumer which path he/she has to follow to achieve their goals to promote their website.

Other Problems with SEO

Some foolish SEO’s do stupid stuff that will get your website banned from search engines. These are not the only problem in SEO industry there are some lazy SEO’s to do a good job. Its for sure that your site won’t get banned if you are not aggressive. For SEO many keywords requires research, loads of efforts, and extensive link building.

For Example link building is the most time consuming and most expensive part of SEO. But often it is skipped of not done properly by many members of SEO community.

So, it’s my advise to please review a company of consult with someone before investing on your website for an SEO.

According to Andy Jones, a member of the Best Practices Search Engine Forums, fraudulent clicks are just another aspect of the business. “Any of us that use AdWords or any other PPC has to pay for a certain percentage of fraudulent clicks,” he said in a forum discussion. “I factor it in as a cost of doing business.”

Can you believe that? In other words, he’s saying, I know the pay-per-click companies are stealing my money, but it’s okay, because I’ve considered that fact ahead of time.

Unfortunately, that mentality is pervasive among pay-per-click advertisers. No wonder the pay-per-click companies aren’t making stopping pay-per-click fraud a top priority. Who can blame them? If their advertisers don’t care, why should they? Heck, with all of the money the pay-per-click companies are making, it’s actually more cost effective to issue an occasional refund, than to develop technology to eliminate click fraud.

And if you read between the lines of the following statement, Google even admitted as much:

In a recent filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission, Google acknowledged, “We are exposed to the risk of fraudulent clicks on our ads. We have regularly paid refunds related to fraudulent clicks and expect to do so in the future. If we are unable to stop this fraudulent activity, these refunds may increase. If we find new evidence of past fraudulent clicks, we may have to issue refunds retroactively of amounts previously paid to our Google Network members.”

That statement doesn’t exactly instill any confidence, now does it?

And if Overture is asked about click fraud, they’ll just issue their standard company line:

“Our Click Protection System is sophisticated software that evaluates each of our advertisers’ clicks. This software makes decisions as to the validity of any click. Our Click Protection System uses search and click data to make both rules-based inferences and pattern recognition-based inferences about which clicks are valid clicks. We have two patents pending related to this technology, so we cannot currently disclose too many details about the methods we use.”

Do you honestly think newspaper, magazine, radio or tv advertisers would just sit back and let those media get away with blatantly stealing their money? You know they wouldn’t.

Then why do pay-per-click advertisers allow it? I don’t know the exact answer to that question, but I have my theories: First of all, you’re talking about a whole different level of sophistication with pay-per-click advertisers, compared to media advertisers. Many pay-per-click advertisers don’t even know how to access or even analyze their log files, so they have no idea how much money is actually being stolen from them.

In addition, some pay-per-click advertisers are making more money than they’ve ever made before. And rather than upset the apple cart, they’d rather keep quiet and allow the vicious cycle of click fraud to continue, so that they can keep cashing those big checks.

I also suspect many advertisers are afraid that if they complain too loudly, they may be penalized in the search engines, in regard to their free listings.

If my theories are accurate, silence is one heck of a trade off, if you ask me. Why? Because according to a report on MediaPost, an online study done by Clicklab revealed that fraudulent clicks can account for more than 50 percent of your total clicks.

So, if the goal of pay-per-click search engines is to bring lucrative, targeted traffic to your web site, what are the pay-per-click search engines doing about the click fraud epidemic, to prevent abuse that needlessly drive up your costs and reduce your ROI?

Unfortunately, since so many pay-per-click advertisers are willing to play the role of “lambs going to slaughter,” the pay-per-click companies really don’t have to do anything.

In the meantime, your ROI is going to continue to plummet, and the pay-per-click companies are going to continue to milk those cash cows (AKA) pay-per-click advertisers, for all they’re worth!

When new local advertisers first begin using tools like AdWords or Overture, they usually grab a bunch of keywords, fill in a pay-per-click (PPC) ad, activate the account and wait for the new visitors to start showing up on their website and requesting their service. Rare is the advertiser who succeeds with such a simple, unrefined campaign.

There are several steps involved in creating a winning PPC campaign. Among them, detailed keyword research and well thought-out PPC ad design. But even if those 2 things are done exceptionally well, your chances of success still hinge entirely on your landing page, or what I prefer to call your Lead Conversion Page. A Lead Conversion Page is the web page that shows up when a potential client clicks on your ppc ad. For most new advertisers that page is the home page of your website. Unfortunately, most home pages don’t make suitable Lead Conversion Pages.

A good Lead Conversion Page is one that fulfills the specific promise of the PPC ad. When a client clicks on your ad, they need to immediately find–in obvious fashion–whatever it is they wanted when they clicked on your ad. What that means is that if you create an ad for $20 off carpet cleaning, you need to send them to a page that’s all about having their carpet cleaned for $20 off. Not the home page of your site that has information about carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, pet odor removal, water extraction or anything else. The key is you want to eliminate distractions, and make it easy for your visitor to respond to the offer you made in your PPC ad.

Creating a new and improved Lead Conversion Page doesn’t require a major overhaul of your website, or special programming (in most cases). Usually you can just add a page or redo the one you’re already using. Don’t make the mistake of sending your visitors to your cluttered, distracting home page. Simple is good.
